LGBT-inclusive advertising (which depict same-sex couplehood either in images or words) among mainstream advertisers is a rare thing, indeed. This is part of my series to document companies who market a product or service meant for the general population but with an ad that targets, focuses on or includes the LGBT community.

My brother Kenny and his wife were in a car accident earlier this year. They were rear-ended at high speed and the car was totaled as it was pushed into the car in front of them. They, thankfully, had only minor injuries and recovered.

On my Red Herring magazine business card – notice that I have no title. At the time, the owner believed in a flat structure, where all the news folk were equals as journalists. I don’t believe they operate this way any more.

Now for non-gay people this may not seem like a big deal. But believe me, it is. This card was the first insurance card that I had that included Rich as my domestic partner and dependent. If you click and enlarge the photo, you’ll notice the name of “Joshua,” too. Rich became the legal guardian of his cousin after the death of Josh’s mother – this happened well before Rich and I ever met. They came as a package deal. Here, Josh was included on my insurance as my stepchild.

.Gaelen Gates and I made up T-Shirts for Peter’s going away party with these pictures on the front and back. We made one for Peter and 1 for each of us. Little did we know that the day of Peter’s party was also the day that the news division would be shut down and all of us laid off.
